Greetings, All:
When September rolls around, I get a little anxious.
24 years ago seems like yesterday. Our family was notified on September 12, 2001 that my cousin, Betty Ong was one of the flight attendants aboard American Airlines Flight 11 – the first flight to hit the World Trade Center. Shock and sadness turned into pride and appreciation when it was revealed that she had a major role in helping save countless lives. Her bravery astounds me to this day.
The unity the country experienced in the aftermath of 9/11 feels all too short lived, now. It’s difficult to make sense of another tragedy that took place this month. Whether you agree or disagree with the opinions of a public figure, there’s no call for what transpired. Many of us are left wondering, “What have we become?”
Maybe if we were the ones in charge, things would be different. We’d be honest. We’d be fair. We’d look out for the little guy. We’d stick to our values and not get pulled around by powerful interests. We’d talk to people better. We’d work together better.
If only, right?
But we’re not—and probably never will be. And in times like these, when the world feels heavy and chaotic, when so much seems out of our hands, it’s easy to feel powerless or overwhelmed.
But here’s the thing: we are in charge of something—ourselves. Our attitudes. One of my favorite poems of all time is “Attitude” by Charles Swindoll.

ATTITUDE
by Charles Swindoll
|
|
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you…we are in charge of our Attitudes.”

All of us—no matter who we are—should try to live like people who carry themselves with discipline and integrity.
That means being honest in our own lives. Being fair. Sticking to what we believe in, even when it’s not easy. Watching out for people who need help. Communicating better. Working better with others.
We don’t get to decide what happens on the global stage. We can’t fix everything. But we can decide how we show up in our daily lives—in our homes, our jobs, our communities.
Sure, it’d be great to have more wise, grounded people in power. But a more reachable (and just as important) goal is having people like that running businesses, raising families, being good neighbors, showing up for their teams. And not just the ones at the top—everyone.
The good news? You’re already in one or more of those roles.
So don’t wait around. Don’t get stuck in the doom and gloom. Do the work. Be the kind of person you wish was in charge. Be who the world needs right now. We need you.
Till next month,
Derek, Emily, Natalie, Mo & Arwin

September 2025
As of the first week of September, mortgage rates, at slightly below 6.3%, are suddenly getting close to the 6% range many analysts believe is required to significantly boost buyer demand. But interest rates have been extremely volatile in recent years, with big, sudden changes in direction common – as occurred last year in late summer/autumn.

* The City of San José approved the first Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) condominium in the state. The home, located on Joséfa Street, near downtown, will be the first ADU in the state of California that can be sold separately from the property’s main house. The move provides another opportunity for affordable homeownership during the housing crisis. Will other areas allow this or reject it, as it poses shifts in the fabric of neighborhoods and communities?
* According to the Federal Reserve, the silent generation and baby boomers own nearly $25 trillion in real estate combined, which will be passed down to younger generations over the next 20 years or so…..and lots of it will bypass capital gains taxes due to the step-up basis of our tax code. ie: A home that was bought for $200k, worth $2 million today would incur capital gains taxes of over $250k if sold while both owners are alive….once passed onto heirs, that heir can sell the property with a cost basis of $2 million and not incur any capital gains taxes….. which may explain why many more Americans are aging in place. 75% of adults aged 50 and older would prefer to stay in their homes as they age.

What a unique neighborhood, rich in history! The fact that we have two homes currently for sale here makes it a perfect neighborhood to spotlight this month! Glen Park is a vibrant gem of a neighborhood tucked away in the southeast corner of the City with bustling restaurants, a wonderful community grocery store, bars, and bakeries. In fact, I look forward to trying out the new restaurant on Chenery, called La Cigale. And let’s not forget, the neighborhood is especially popular for its walkable access to the BART station. Personally, I have always spent much time in Glen Canyon. Growing up, I attended Silver Tree Day Camp here, where we ran around searching for Big Foot, and now, raising two sons in the City, we spend hours here for baseball, soccer, and basketball practices. I love how I can hike with our dog through the beautiful trails while they are practicing, a real win-win! Glen Park has always held a special place in my heart, as my great-grandparents raised their four children at 56 Mizpah Street, right in the heart of Glen Park! My Great Grandmother and her neighbors had Victory Gardens in their backyards during WW2. In fact, her son, George Dunn, spent countless hours playing baseball in Glen Park. He played for a short stint on the San Francisco Seals as a pitcher before going off to the War. He was killed in action on Dec 7, 1941 on the USS West Virginia. I know my memories are only one of many more wonderful and rich stories that come out of this charming and historic neighborhood. Even though things have changed with the times, Glen Park has retained its inviting sense of community with neighborhood cleanups, free movie nights at Glen Park Rec Center, and Night Markets featuring art, food, and music!

As a cold front moves out of the Gulf of Alaska, showers are expected to arrive in the North Bay as soon as Monday afternoon and make their way south through the rest of the region, Dalton Behringer, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office, told SFGATE on Sunday.
