Greetings, All:
In the aftermath of natural disasters like Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, we’re reminded of the importance of our shared humanity. These devastating storms have wreaked havoc on countless lives, displacing families, destroying homes, and leaving communities in despair. As Americans, we can’t afford to lose our empathy for those affected, even as our nation grapples with deep political divisions that have consumed our discourse over the past eight years.
Political differences have created a climate of polarization, but in times of crisis, our shared values as human beings must come first. We can’t allow partisan lines to define who deserves our compassion or care. When a hurricane strikes, it does not differentiate between political affiliations, socioeconomic status, or belief systems. Its victims are our neighbors, fellow citizens, and fellow human beings. Our response to such tragedies has to rise above the noise of division and focus on what truly matters—helping those in need.
Empathy is the cornerstone of a compassionate society. It binds us together and reminds us that, at our core, we’re all vulnerable to the forces of nature and the unpredictability of life. In times of crisis, empathy compels us to reach out to those suffering, offering support, solace, and aid. We must remember that the strength of our nation has always been in our ability to come together, despite our differences, in moments of need.
When raging wildfires and destructive earthquakes hit California, people from across the country volunteered aid. Now I have friends who have been affected by the calamity back East, and I pray they receive the help they need, not just from those in their vicinity, but from those here as well.
As we witness the destruction caused by these hurricanes, let’s choose to act not with indifference but with compassion. Let’s ensure that our differences do not lead to a lack of concern for our fellow Americans. Disasters like these challenge us to show our best selves, to put aside political acrimony, and to unite in helping rebuild lives and communities. By doing so, we reaffirm the values that make us a resilient and compassionate nation. In times of crisis, we can’t lose our humanity.
Please consider a donation to the American Red Cross and other frontline forces.
Till next month,
Derek, Natalie, Mo & Chrissie

October 2024
As of early October, mortgage rates were the lowest since February 2023, but then an unexpectedly strong jobs report caused them to spike back up, perhaps just short-term fluctuations amid the major downward trend. of recent months. It has been very challenging in recent years to predict changes in interest rates, as there are many unpredictable national and international economic and political factors at play, but the consensus opinion is that rates will (probably” continue to decline in Q4.

This month, we feature Scott and Lee, who sold their San Francisco home and moved to Orcas Island, WA. Pictured here in front of their new house. This was our 5th transaction with them over many years. You may recognize why, yes that’s Natalie’s daughter, so you guessed it, it’s her ex husband. Gotta love and respect a relationship that can endure a divorce and 5 real estate transactions! She must be doing something right. =)

* The FED cut their rate by 50 basis points, double what most had anticipated. Many believe this could deliver that ‘soft landing’, the original mission. We’ve now entered the era of normalizing rates.
* Marry the home, but date the rate? It appears some smart buyers who bought when rates were higher are now refinancing. Applications to refinance a home loan surged 20% last week compared with the previous week. This is the average contract interest rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage with conforming loan balances ($766,550 or less) decreased to 6.13% from 6.15% The refinance share of applications rose to 55.7%. Mortgage applications to purchase a home rose just 1% for the week and were 2% higher than the same week one year ago. (CNBC)
* What are the big buzzwords and trends in luxury bathroom design these days? Texture. Tech. Wellness. Double-Duty. Grout-free. Imperfection. (Architectural Digest)
* For years, Argentina imposed one of the world’s strictest rent-control laws meant to keep homes affordable, but instead, rents soared. Now, the country has scrapped the rental law, along with most government price controls, in a fiscal experiment. The result: The Argentine capital is undergoing a rental-market boom. Landlords are rushing to put their properties back on the market, with Buenos Aires rental supplies increasing by over 170%. While rents are still up in nominal terms, many renters are getting better deals than ever, with a 40% decline in the real price of rental properties when adjusted for inflation since last October. – WSJ

For any Bay Area photography aficionado, it’s hard to reconcile the meticulous technique and style of Fred Lyon’s images with pure luck. Today, Lyon is best known for his noir photography, which earned him the moniker of San Francisco’s Brassai, but before he developed that reputation, he was known as a versatile professional who accentuated his vision with deep technical skills.

Few San Francisco dim sum restaurants enjoy the notoriety of Yank Sing. Adored by downtown office workers and tourists alike, the gargantuan restaurant at Rincon Center is known for drawing incredible crowds, particularly on the weekends.
