Greetings, All:
We hope your summer has had a fine start, the hotter than average temperatures notwithstanding.
For copyright reasons, I can’t post a one panel cartoon I recently came across. An old man with a walker is standing next to his son, both facing a very packed garage-size storage unit: “One day Son all this will be yours.” My siblings and I have heard this from our parents, and we’ll hopefully be able to help them declutter before that day arrives. Mixed in with family mementos and heirlooms will be lots of things we just don’t need, want or have the space to put. I look at my own home and garage, and I’m tempted to get rid of EVERYTHING I’m not using on a regular basis. SERENITY NOW! I can still remember my friend Marcia gleefully telling me how much “stuff” she had gotten rid of. She had become very intent on ridding herself of possessions, and it was a freeing moment for her. 5 years ago, a woman named Marie Kondo became an internet and Netflix sensation as she taught people to keep only those possessions which “sparked joy” in them.
Stoic philosopher Seneca wrote: “With regard to the objects which we pursue, and for which we strive with great effort, we should note this truth…Some objects are superfluous; others are not worth the price we pay for them. But we do not see this clearly, and we regard things as free gifts when they really cost us very dear…We are eager to attain them at the cost of anxiety, of danger, and of lost honor, personal freedom, and time.”
There’s a hidden cost to everything you own. Things don’t just cost you monetarily. They cost you mentally, too, a subconscious mental burden. The things we own can end up owning us. We have to use them, get our money’s worth, decide where to put them, maintain them, and insure them. These tasks, along with other subconscious mental burdens, constantly weigh us down.
It’s really that simple. Reduce the amount of stuff you have and you’ll free yourself from this very heavy (and often unnecessary) burden. I’ll start.
Finally, there’s a prevailing thought that during July and August we in the real estate industry take off on holiday as many do. That may be true of some of us, but that’s the beauty of our team concept: “There’s always someone home to handle one of the biggest investments of your lives”. Our listings are still selling, our buyers are still closing on the homes they absolutely LOVE. Thanks everyone for depending on us, we just love what we do.
Till next month,
Derek, Natalie, Mo & Chrissie

As of early July, mortgage rates continue to hover around 7%, though hopes remain for at least one reduction in the Fed’s benchmark rate in 2024. Stock markets have sustained their extraordinary rise. The homeowner’s insurance situation remains challenging with policies often difficult to locate and increasingly expensive. And the latest Census estimates revealed the Bay Area is growing older, with fewer children and a rising number of residents aged 65+.

Wonder who keeps the plates spinning in actuality in the Chin Rome Team? It’s our wonderful Operations Manager, Arwin Barrongo! Arwin resides in the Philippines, but somehow works during our US Pacific Time Zone. We’re starting our 4th year with him on the team and we could not imagine “life” without him. He’s a quick study and works so efficiently. In his spare time, he loves to travel, enjoy both home cooked and dine-out meals with his lovely family, mountain biking, motorcycles and range shooting. Also a dog lover.
We love Arwin!

* Here are Five Undeniable Truths from Steve Jobs worth pondering today:
1. Don’t educate your children to be rich: educate them to be happy so when they grow up, they will know the value of things and not the price.
2. Eat your food as your medicine, otherwise, you have to eat medicine as your food.
3. The 6 best doctors in the world are: Sunlight, rest, exercise, diet, self-confidence and friends. Maintain them in all stages and enjoy a healthy life.
4. If you just want to walk fast, walk alone, but if you want to walk far, walk together.
5. The ones who love you will never leave you. Even if there are 100 reasons to give-up, they will find one reason to hold on.
* Where are all the buyers? Traveling! The TSA screened a staggering 2.99 million passengers at airports across the country on Sunday, June 23, the highest number in a single day!
* Will the Fed cut rates three times by year-end? Lazard’s market strategist Temple says so! (WSJ)

A month of Pride festivities was capped off today with a joyous parade down Market Street. The annual event, which reportedly draws over a million people each year with an economic impact of over $500 million, is the city’s largest-scale public event. In many ways, it’s also the most joyous, with the city’s LGBTQ community taking to the streets in a celebration of queer culture, and allies cheering along from the sidelines.

SF bar named one of the best new bars of 2024 by Bon Appetit
Mother, a queer women-centric neighborhood bar at 3079 16th St. in the Mission District, was one of 11 bars across the country that made it onto the revered food and drink magazine’s annual list. The publication does not rank the bars numerically, instead collectively elevating the bars as some of the best in the entire country.

On a sunny afternoon in rural Humboldt County, I’m cruising an unpaved road through the hills, headed for what has to be the most remote wellness retreat in all of California: Heartwood Mountain Sanctuary.
